Acanthus Stitch-a-Long, part 7

Hi everyone! I hope you are all safe and well.

So happy to report that I finished stitching the leaves!!!

There's a lot of frankly tedious background stitching ahead of me, but the thinking part of the project is done. I even got a tiny start on the dark blue that is the background:

I'm not sure whether I should have waited to stitch the light blue "dots" until after the area around them has been stitched. they seem to get swallowed up in the dark blue:

By our next check-in I hope to have a quarter of this top half filled in. As I have just started on it, I don't know if that's super ambitious or if I'm sandbagging!

The other stitchers in this stitch-a-long all make amazing, and inspiring projects, so check out everyone's blogs to see what they're all up to.

Avis, Claire, Gun, Carole, Sue, Constanze, Christina, Kathy, Margaret, CindyHeidi, Jackie, Hayley, Megan, Deborah, Mary MargaretRenee, Carmela, Jocelyn, SharonDaisy, AnneConnieAJ, JennyLaura, CathieLinda, Sherrie, and a very warm welcome back to Helen!

See you on May 31st for our next check-in!

  1. Oh my goodness how those pretty leaves pop with that gorgeous blue background. I think you did the right thing to stitch the light blue first. They pop on the photo. Sometimes as we are working, we can't see it.

    1. Thanks Cathie! I had forgotten how much the background -- though tedious! -- makes the foreground pop.

    1. Thanks Carmela! I can't tell whether it will move more quickly or more slowly now.

  3. The background is such a great color, a reward for all those difficult leaves, and how nice to have something that you can do while watching a movie, etc. :) I think you have cranked this out rather quickly Sunny, well done!

    1. Thanks Kathy! I'm really happy with how it's coming together. And not having to think and wonder which green that is!

  4. That's fantastic progress! Definitely best to do the light blue first then it's just a case of some "mindless" stitching. I'd forgotten it had a dark blue background. Perfect!

    1. Thanks Avis! I did a little test of stitching the dark blue and then going back and doing the light blue, and it really didn't look very different -- I just had to concentrate a lot more on keeping the light blue spaces open! Light blue first it is!

  6. Well done on finishing the leaves! Woohoo! Personally, it's the boring bits I like best about needlepoint. Gives my feeble brain a rest (which it seems to need more and more these days).

    1. Thanks Sue! It's these background bits that make me think, hmm, cross stitch that isn't full coverage for the next project? Yes please! ;)

  7. This is such a beautiful piece. I think when all the dark blue fills in, we'll spot the light blue dots overall.

    1. Thanks Christina! I think they're meant to just break up the plain background a bit, so even as faint as they are it's enough.

  8. Wonderful progress, Sunny. I often go back over smaller details like your light blues there to help them stand out more. But anyway, this part will be easier on the eyes and brain!

    1. Thanks Jocelyn! At least it's now just two very different colors to keep track of!

  9. I like the dark blue! Maybe the light blue was ment to be sort of hiding?

    1. Thanks Gun! I think it's just meant to add a little texture to the background, so I'm not too worried about it "disappearing" a little.

  11. Firstly thank you for the lovely warm welcome back on my blog Sunny. With so many of us now its going to take me a fortnight to get to read everyones blog and reply but I don't mind. As least my hour or so I am allowed on the computer is fun with all the beautiful projects to see. You will be happy dancing soon as with no pattern needing to be followed for the background you will be moving fast I think. xx

  12. Beautiful ! I don't think I could have waited to do the background all at once but at least it should be easy to do in front of a good show , no way to make mistakes !

    1. Thanks Megan! I found the color matching really challenging so wanted to get through that sooner rather than later. But yes, now it's the easy (if boring) part!
